Marwell Zoo are Keeping Their Animals Warm with Infrared Sensors

Smart technology is being used for a growing number of reasons, with the main positives surrounding saving energy and also saving money. Research and development of products has resulted in so many amazing gadgets and gizmos being available to us, which are easily integrated into our lives and can give us a fantastic user experience whilst reducing our emissions.

Marwell Zoo are no different in wanting to save energy and money, and are using smart technology to achieve this and by partnering with IBM they are well on track to reducing their emissions by 30-40% during the winter months.

By using a motion sensor on the heaters within the bedding areas for some of the animals during the night, analysis is showing that they are more than 95% accurate and allow for the heaters to be turned on and off automatically when the animals are present.

The energy and cost savings become apparent when the motion sensors are used as it takes away the need to have the heaters on constantly throughout the night – when the zookeepers know that the animals do not sleep for long periods throughout the night and tend to visit the outside areas of their enclosures.

Smart technology is going to make a huge difference to Marwell Zoo, meaning that money saved can be spent on conservation projects. Have you considered how smart technology could also free up some of your hard earned cash?
