The EU Directive on energy efficiency and environmental protection was introduced in 2011 to lower carbon emissions on fuel/electrical reliant products. By introducing energy efficiency rating on products, it ensures the reduction in the carbon impact that operating appliances has upon the environment along with a more responsible approach to the use of electricity and traditional fossil fuels.
Energy efficiency ratings currently stretch from G to A rated, with G ratings being very energy inefficient and often expensive to run. A rated appliances can often save you money on your energy bill as they are cheaper to run owing to their increased levels of efficiency.
Many of our high-street stores will only stock A rated appliances, however, from April 2018, the option to buy a lower rated item will be gone. Whilst many of us consider that this will only be the case for white goods and several home appliances such as televisions and smaller electrical items, boilers will also fall into this category, with only A rated boilers being available for purchase and installation.
Why is an A rated new boiler more efficient?
As technology has developed, the integral workings of boilers have too. In a nutshell, the heat exchanger is designed to transfer heat between two fluids, therefore the larger the heat exchanger the more heat can be exchanged. Heat exchangers within A rated boilers are a lot larger, which means more heat can be transferred to either the central heating system or hot water, making them more efficient. As they are more efficient, less gas is used in the process which in turn saves you money.
In the same way that advances have been made to boiler technology, huge leaps have been made in the way that we control and monitor our heating. Smart heating controls along with generic heating controls aid massively in the reduction of costs as they are more compatible and specifically designed to fit in with our lives. Meaning ultimately, that we can programme our heating to compliment when we are at home therefore potentially cutting out burning gas when we simply don’t need to.
