Solar Panel Installation Timeline: What to Expect from Start to Finish

Solar Panel Installation Timeline: What to Expect from Start to Finish - Heat IQ

Most websites will tell you that solar panel installation takes just one to two days, and while that’s technically true for the physical work on your roof, the whole process from first enquiry to switch-on takes considerably longer. At Heat IQ, we believe in transparency. That’s why we’ve outlined every stage of the installation journey, from your initial enquiry to the day your system begins generating clean, cost-saving electricity. Whether in a rural village or a busy town in Yorkshire, this will give you a clear idea of what to expect every step of the way.

Step One:
Your Initial Enquiry and Consultation

The journey begins when you contact us. You might call, send a message, or complete an enquiry form. From there, we arrange a free, no-obligation consultation. Depending on your availability, this usually happens within a few days.

We’ll take time to understand your energy usage and goals, whether you’re aiming to reduce bills, cut carbon emissions, or increase self-sufficiency. Our team will assess your roof orientation, available space, and any shading issues. This early assessment allows us to plan a system specifically for your home and lifestyle.

Step Two:
System Design and Quotation

Once we’ve visited your property (or conducted a virtual assessment), we will design your solar system. This typically takes two to five working days, depending on the complexity of your setup and whether any bespoke components are required. We aim to build a design that matches your property’s layout, energy habits, and long-term goals.

The design proposal includes a clear visual layout of the proposed solar panel arrangement, considering roof pitch, orientation, and any shading from nearby trees or structures. We also specify the most suitable inverter, discuss battery storage options if relevant, and provide projected generation figures based on local sunshine data. This helps you understand what kind of environmental and financial returns you can expect from your system.

In terms of presentation, we include a detailed breakdown of system components, an estimated installation timeline, and a full cost summary with no hidden extras. Our quote is designed to be comprehensive yet easy to understand so that you can make a confident decision.

At this point, we also carry out a technical site survey. This ensures that the physical installation will run smoothly and safely. We assess your roof’s structural integrity, check electrical connections and fuse board capacity, and verify that your system will comply with MCS standards and UK building regulations. Everything is double-checked before moving forward to ensure that your system is efficient, safe, and future-proof.

Step Three:
Permits, Paperwork, and Grid Connection Applications

With your quote accepted, we begin the essential preparatory work that often goes unseen but is critical to a compliant and smooth installation. In most cases, solar panel installations in the UK fall under permitted development rights, which means planning permission isn’t required. However, there are exceptions. Additional permissions may be needed if your property is listed, within a conservation area, or part of a development with restrictive covenants. We handle these requirements on your behalf, liaising with local councils to ensure all regulations are met and that your installation stays on schedule.

Another vital step is applying for permission to connect your system to the national grid. This involves submitting a G98 or G99 application to your local Distribution Network Operator (DNO). The type of application depends on the size and complexity of your system. For most domestic installations under 3.68kW per phase, a G98 is sufficient and can be submitted post-installation. Larger systems or properties with three-phase supply require a G99 application, which must be submitted and approved before installation begins.

The approval process typically takes two to four weeks, although it varies by region. We track progress closely and keep you updated throughout. This stage ensures your system integrates safely with the local grid and protects your home and network.

By managing this paperwork for you, we reduce delays and ensure your installation is efficient and fully compliant with national standards and industry best practices.

Step Four:
Installation Day

Installation usually takes one to two days, depending on the size and complexity of your system. On the day, our team arrives on time and walks you through the planned schedule before getting started. We begin by setting up scaffolding to ensure safe access to your roof. This is generally erected the day before or first thing and is taken down promptly once the work is complete.

The solar panel installation starts with mounting the framework securely onto your roof. This is followed by attaching the solar panels and wiring them to your inverter, which converts the electricity from direct current (DC) to usable alternating current (AC). If you’ve chosen battery storage or smart monitoring, these components are also installed and integrated at this stage.

Inside your home, we’ll complete the necessary electrical connections to your consumer unit, install isolators, and configure your generation meter. We take great care to keep your property tidy and minimise disruption to your daily routine. We’re always happy to explain what we’re doing and check in with you during the day to update you on progress.

Most systems are fully installed and operational within 48 hours, and before we leave, we ensure everything is left neat, safe, and ready for commissioning.

Step Five:
Testing, Commissioning, and Certification

After installation, we thoroughly test the system. We check performance, ensure all safety protocols are met, and commission the system so it’s ready to start generating energy.

You’ll receive your MCS certificate, DNO confirmation, warranty documents, and a full handover pack. We’ll also help you set up any mobile apps or online dashboards so you can begin monitoring your solar production from day one.

Step Six:
Smart Export Guarantee and Ongoing Support

With your system live, you can now register for the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG). This allows you to earn money for any excess electricity you export back to the grid. We’ll assist you with the application and ensure you have all the relevant documents.

From there, we continue to support you. If you need assistance, want to add more panels or batteries in the future, or have a question about your system’s performance, we’re only ever a phone call away.

How Long Does the Whole Process Take?

The average solar panel installation takes between four and eight weeks from initial contact to completion. The exact timeline depends on property type, DNO response times, and customer availability for site visits. We keep you informed throughout, so you’re never left wondering what’s happening or when.
